Keighley 13 Selby 0 - Keighley overcame struggling Selby in a dour contest.

The first half was pointless in every sense of the word as the visitors looked jittery in the face of relegation and Keighley's attempts to play expansive rugby collapsed in a plethora of unforced errors.

Breaks by flanker Leigh Sugden and stand off Johnny Harrison lacked support and on too many occasions possession was turned over after tackles.

The visitors had the better of the few first half chances on offer, stand off Dan Porter missing a straightforward pot at goal and centre Bennett spurning a three-man overlap with a badly directed kick ahead. Nonetheless Keighley's defence was secure and as half time approached there were increasing signs that they were gaining the ascendancy.

An early second half penalty goal miss by Porter was another indication that this was not to be Selby's day.

It proved to be almost their last scoring chance as Keighley finally re-captured some of the form of recent weeks. Neat work by wingman Richard Cavender set up an attacking base from which full back Mark Beckett broke well before finding hooker Dave Pullen lurking wide out and unmarked with his try scoring pass.

The introduction of flanker Rob Ellis for the hard working Pete Schofield, brought about a further sense of urgency for the Utley men. His strong running and fierce tackling disrupted even more Selby's ever declining challenge.

After an earlier miss, Harrison increased the lead with a penalty goal before a break by Ellis put Pullen in the clear again. Faced with a 30 metre run to the line he urgently, and wisely, looked for support which was sadly lacking and the chance was gone.

It was left to the redoubtable Ellis to complete the scoring when he peeled off from a forward drive to the line following a five-metre line out.

Keighley's forth consecutive win was not totally convincing, but was nonetheless the result of an honest and determined all round effort.

Ellis and Lee Gordon were outstanding in another solid performance by the pack and Beckett and scrum half Adam Balderstone stole the honours in the backs.

Sadly Beckett's excellent season appears to be over with a badly broken thumb, as Keighley are forced to end the season as it began with a growing list of injuries. Absent from the squad are forwards Andy Bennett and Stuart Inman and backs Beckett, Asa Firth, Nigel Curr and Matthew Cox. Coach Jeff Inman will be reflecting on what might have been if he had, even once, been able to put out his strongest side this season.

With North Ribblesdale unable to fulfil Saturday's fixture at Settle, there will be no first team match this weekend.
