Silsden Juniors Football Club are set to get England's World Cup campaign off to a flying start - with 'Big Screen' celebrations for their opening game.

David Beckham and Wayne Rooney will be kicking off in England's opening game against Paraguay at 2pm on June 10, the first day of Silsden's massive six-a-side junior competition.

"Last year we had over 2,500 children taking part over two days of the competition, and this year it will have a special World Cup flavour," said organiser John Lohan.

Teams from throughout the north of England take part in the competition with scouts from the biggest clubs in the land searching the junior teams for the stars of the future.

"Last year the head of youth Development for Manchester United, Derek Longley, was at the competition for both days and spotted a number of players who interested him.

"There were also scouts from Leeds United, Burnley, Blackburn and Huddersfield Town watching the games and keeping a keen eye open for players they thought could make the grade. They want to get young players into their coaching academies as soon as possible, before they pick up any bad habits," Mr Lohan said.

This year the Silsden competition is being held on June 10 and 11 with competitions from 7, 8 and 10 year-olds on the opening day with the 9 and 11-year-olds on Sunday.

"This year some of the age groups have been slow filling up and we think it may be because of the start of the World Cup, but we can't think of a better way to build up to the world's biggest competition for the players and their families.

"The lads will be able to play the part of their heroes in the morning - and watch them on TV in the afternoon," John said.

Organisers are also planning to have big screen televisions around the ground so players and officials won't miss a minute of the build-up, or the match itself.

Places are still available for teams to join in the action with full details and applications forms available from John Lohan on 01535-656753 or Anne Cairns on 01535-634932.
