Keighley darter Louise Simmonds has been crowned Gibraltar ladies champion - and won a place in the World Masters competition to be played later this year.

Louise, 34, who is a member of the mixed and ladies teams at The Star public house on North Street, Keighley, travelled to Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol to compete in the Spanish Ladies Open, and enjoyed one of the best playing weeks of her life.

She reached the final of the Spanish competition, but had to be content with runners-up spot.

She then decided to make a day trip to Gibraltar to take in their national championship and continued her impressive form.

In the final she came up against Jan Robbins, who is ranked seventh in the world and beat her 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

"In the end it came down to who could hit a double, and I just got the upper hand," Louise said.

Louise, a self-employed nail technician, started playing as a teenager when she went out with her mother and plays Super League darts with the local team. She is also a member of the Yorkshire Ladies A team.

On top of her success in the individual competitions she also reached the final of the Spanish Ladies Pairs event after teaming up with her Yorkshire team mate Manda McKenzie.

"The victory in Gibraltar was certainly the biggest win of my career and now I go through to the Winmau World Masters that is held in October and will be shown on television," she said.
