A Guiseley serviceman who was killed in the Falklands War has been honoured with the unveiling of a new plaque.

Sub Lieutenant Richard Emly was on board HMS Sheffield in the South Atlantic when the ship was hit by an Exocet missile fired from an Argentinian aircraft.

The missile caused major casualties and damage, disabling the weapon systems' power supply.

Sub Lieutenant Emly, part of the computer room crew, stayed at his post to try to restore the system - despite increasing smoke and poor lighting - while other parts of the ship were evacuated.

But he was eventually overcome by the fumes.

His actions earned him a posthumous Mention in Despatches from the Royal Navy, but until now his name has been conspicuous by its absence from Guiseley War Memorial.

That all changed on Tuesday when a new plaque marking his sacrifice was dedicated by the Rev Graham Atherton, rector of St Oswald's Parish Church.

Guiseley and Rawdon ward Councillor Graham Latty said: "This case was mentioned to me during the last Remembrance Day period. The Guiseley branch of the Royal British Legion approached me and said it would be nice to have a plaque on the wall for this chap, who was the only one from Guiseley, as far as we know, who died in the Falklands.

"So with my MICE money I had a bronze plaque made to go alongside the others on the memorial, because we had them for other wars but not for the Falklands.

"We thought it would be nice that when Sub Lieutenant Emly's name is read out with the others at future Remembrance Days he has a plaque, like all the others, too."

Coun Latty and British Legion members were amongst the other guests who attended the dedication ceremony in the Memorial Garden.
