An artist more used to portraying the glamour of football has turned his skills to cricket stars.

Darren Baker has completed a painting depicting all 18 county cricket captains in action for the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA).

And he has now been commissioned by the PCA to provide paintings of key moments in the England team's triumph over Australia in last year's Ashes series.

Mr Baker, 30, as official artist for the Professional Footballers' Association, has been more used to doing portraits of some of the biggest names in soccer.

But he was unfazed when the PCA approached him to present action shots of the 18 county captains next to their respective club logos.

The finished drawing has been reproduced as a limited edition print which will be signed by all the captains, including Yorkshire's Craig White.

Mr Baker, who has his own gallery and studio in Saltaire, said he was honoured to have been asked to produce the work.

He said: "I've worked with the Professional Footballers' Association and it also deals with the Cricketers' Association.

"That's how it ended up asking me to produce this art work."

And rather than draw each cricketer individually and position them later, Mr Baker produced the entire artwork in one go. He said: "What you see there is the way I created it from start to finish.

"I didn't leave it for the printer to put things into place.

"The PCA sent me a lot of images on disc and I worked on the photos of each player.

"It was very specific about how it wanted it to look, with the players in lines and in alphabetical order."

Mr Baker said capturing the photo-realistic impression of each layer was not as difficult for him as it looks.

He said: "It's just what I do. It's a lot trickier when you're working on a big canvas of a scene where there's composition to think about."

He said he was excited by the England cricketers' recent Test victory against India and the nail-biting Ashes win and was looking forward to carrying out his next commission.

"I'm generally a football fan, but I'm watching more cricket - especially since the England team's been doing well.

"Seeing the national game has made me familiar with the county captains I drew."

In November Mr Baker was named Yorkshire Young Achiever for achievement in management and enterprise.

Since graduating from Bradford College in 1998 he has built a strong reputation, taking part in a UK Millennium show in New York aged 23.

In the same year he was appointed official artist to the Professional Footballers' Association and he has since completed portraits of Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy. He has exhibited through North America, Japan, Europe and across the UK. His work includes subjects ranging from still life to landscape, equestrian to interiors but he is particularly known for his sports portraits.
