Detectives were today investigating a shooting at a Bradford bungalow.

A 38-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds and was in a stable condition last night after he underwent surgery at an unnamed hospital.

A second man, in his late 30s, was treated in hospital for head injuries, believed not to have been caused by a gun. He was later discharged.

The shooting happened at a bungalow in Cross Lane, Great Horton, at 7.30pm on Saturday. Police cordoned off three roads, including Cross Lane, where they meet at a mini roundabout directly outside the home.

The cordon remained in place until early yesterday and two police community support officers spent the day standing guard outside the property as detectives carried out house-to-house inquiries.

Barry Feeley, who lives opposite the bungalow, said he had been watching television at home with his wife and daughter when the shooting happened.

They did not realise there had been anything untoward until they saw police outside the bungalow, which backs on to the playing fields of St Oswald's CE Primary School.

He said a man taken into an ambulance on a stretcher by paramedics had appeared to be conscious.

The occupants of the bungalow had always kept themselves to themselves.

"It was very quiet, we hardly knew they were there," he said.

Mr Feeley, who has lived on Cross Lane for just over a year, said the same people had been living at the house ever since he had moved to the area, although he did not know their names.

Detective Inspector Steve Hopwood, of Bradford South police, said officers wanted to speak to associates of the shot man as part of their investigations.

He said: "Extensive police investigations are on-going today to establish exactly why this happened and to trace the person or people responsible.

"We believe this is an isolated incident. We are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in Cross Lane yesterday or anyone with information about this incident to contact us immediately."
