After 88 years the Firths of Haworth legacy has come to an end. But the name will still remain as a new owner carries the name forward into a new generation.

Nikki Carroll, 33, originally from Haworth, is hoping to keep Firths of Haworth, a ladies dress shop in Main Street, alive and with two young fashion conscious daughters to follow on from her she wants the shop to carry on to be a family run business.

Originally started in 1917 by Ada Firth, Firths of Haworth has been passed on through a generation. Daughter Mary Firth was the second Firth to own the shop and when she passed away her daughter Anne Law took over the shop for 12 years before retiring last year.

By chance Nikki, a former bank manager at a Halifax call centre in Leeds, walked by the shop and when she saw it was for sale she knew this was the career change she had been waiting for.

Nikki said: "When I saw the shop was up for sale and then Anne said she would work with me and show me the ropes, it was like 'wow'.

"Anne was just a huge inspiration to me and she shared all her knowledge about the last 88 years. She taught me all about her background in the clothes industry, explained to me about the customers and introduced me to them all, telling them I was taking over."

Even with some business knowledge passed on from her father, who owned his own business for 33 years, Nikki knows that this would have all been much harder without the support of Anne.

Nikki added: "This has been a big change for all of us, but my husband knows I am committed to this. I only wish I had done this before, but this shop wasn't up for sale then.

"I have always loved clothes and I have always enjoyed dressing nicely. I hope I can work in this shop until I retire as it's like doing my hobby full time. I am well known for loving clothes."

Nikki has still brought in her own personal touch to the shop, with a new settee, tea, coffee and chocolates for customers, background music and a new range of accessories and lines to suit more ages and sizes.
