Guests at a 100th birthday party had to sing for their supper as Keighley Vocal Union celebrated its centenary.

The leading Keighley choir invited other local singing groups to join it for a special concert last Saturday.

Each of the choirs, including Keighley's Holme Singers and Steeton Male Voice Choir, performed individual pieces.

Then all 200 singers from the five choirs came together on the stage at Skipton's Aireville School for a rousing finale, eceiving rapturous applause from the audience of around 300 .

The Vocal Union staged the birthday party concert in Skipton because it could not find a suitable venue big enough in Keighley.

The concert was one of seven special performances planned for the year in Skipton, Ilkley, Bradford and Keighley.

The men and women of the Vocal Union opened Saturday's concert with a five-song set that showed their expertise with various styles of music.

The concert was hosted by the Vocal Union's musical director, Frank Smith, who paid tribute to the talent displayed by the local choirs.

Vocal Union chairman Paul Spencer presented gifts to the leaders of each choir.

Wine and birthday cake was served to members of the audience following the concert.
