Keighley College brickwork apprentice Jordan Ashworth has been nominated for one of the national Learning and Skills Council's prestigious Apprenticeship Awards.

The Personal Achiever of the Year award seeks to acknowledge and celebrate apprentices who have successfully overcome barriers and obstacles.

Jordan, 17, who suffers from dyslexia, has achieved his goals and exceeded all expectations.

He is employed by Narey Construction Ltd in Bradford, and is on the second year of a brickwork apprenticeship, which he expects to complete in June 2006.

He said: "I'm very happy to be nominated for this award, I'm glad someone thought of putting me in for it.

"The course has been brilliant -- everyone has been really helpful. I'm looking forward to passing it, getting the piece of paper and being able to go and work anywhere I want."

Course tutor Mike Dillon said: "Jordan has been a keen and enthusiastic student from day one.

"He is the first to arrive and the last to leave, has an excellent attitude, and is an ideal student. Suffering from dyslexia hasn't been a barrier to him - he's worked hard to overcome this."

Carol Coulton, In2Work Initiatives Manager at Keighley College, added: "Jordan is a lad with a big heart, eternal optimism, total commitment and utter dedication. From day one he impressed us with his determination to overcome his learning difficulties and become a qualified bricklayer."
