Members of a golf club heard about the dangers of prostate cancer as part of a week of initiatives designed to raise awareness of the deadly disease.

Members of Airedale men's health team gave a talk to golfers at the Branshaw club, in Oakworth, on Wednesday.

Simon Jowitt, Branshaw Golf Club secretary, said: "Discussing the problem on the golf course is a new approach to getting some of these serious messages across."

The talk was part of a series of events during Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. On Wednesday, the Turkey Inn, at Goose Eye, held a special pub quiz for its regulars as part of the Prostate Cancer Charity's "Real Man" campaign.

The cancer kills 10,000 men every year, and every hour at least one man dies from the disease.

Merv Pemberton, men's health advisor for Airedale Primary Care Trust, said: "Public awareness of the prostate gland and prostate cancer is still very low. We hope that these events will help men to understand more about this disease and will motivate them, if necessary, to seek medical advice before it's too late."
