A £60,000 project helping householders to combat the threat of flooding will end this month.

And as a parting shot, the Flood: Local Action Plan (FLAP) is providing powered water pumps for residents who find their homes deluged.

The Aire Valley's flood development worker Glen Miller said the pumps would help residents get flooded cellars and gardens cleared without help from the fire service, who can charge for non-emergency call-outs.

Mr Miller said the five pumps for Bradford Council's emergency planning team and Haworth Parish Council were capable of clearing 600 litres of water per minute while situated up to 20 metres above the level of flooding.

"There was some funding left over so it seemed most appropriate to provide something that would allow people to deal with flooding as it happens, because when you need a pump you need it there and then," said Mr Miller.

Mr Miller's role was created 18 months ago following the major flooding of 2000 and smaller-scale incidents since.

In total, £59,600 of Neighbourhood Renewal funding was provided by Bradford Vision for him to pull together members of the community and form flooding action plans.

The 11 plans, including residents in Bingley Main Street; Branksome Drive, Nab Wood; Ash Grove, Bingley; Castlefields Lane, Keighley; Haworth (Cross Roads) and Wrose, gave Mr Miller flood-related questions to put to a steering group of bodies such as Bradford Council, the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water and British Waterways.

He has educated people in the most vulnerable areas about flooding related issues, and offered grants for residents to install measures designed to minimise the risk of flooding.

The grants, from an anonymous £5,000 donation, have allowed one at-risk resident by the River Aire to buy a pump and piping to divert water.

"When I was setting up the action plans I was finding that people, understandably, were angry about the flooding," said Mr Miller.

"My job was to get their genuine concerns answered by agencies concerned with water and helping residents to take their own measures to keep flood water off their properties."

Working from an office at Bingley Voluntary Action, Mr Miller has also set up a website for residents to get free advice on flooding for the next 12 months. The Flood: Local Action Plan website can be found at www.flap.org.uk
