EARBY Youth Hostel will close on October 31 this year, with Stainforth remaining open until October 2007.

The two hostels are among 32 being sold across the UK to help raise funds for a £18 million investment programme.

The closure timetable was revealed this week.

All disposals will take place over the next three years, with Earby closing at the end of the current season but Stainforth remaining open until autumn 2007.

YHA property director Jake Chalmers said: "These dates, which are now set and not open to negotiation, provide a degree of certainty which is vital for both our staff and customers."

He added that the money from the sales would be invested in the YHA's long-term programme to revitalise its network of youth hostels.

Under the programme, Malham Youth Hostel would get better educational facilities and updated accommodation.

Mr Chalmers explained: "We aim to refocus our efforts on young people and provide a network of great hostels in great locations.

"However changing tastes and markets have left us with too many properties that are under-used, in the wrong locations, fail to make a profit, require heavy investment, or a combination of all four.

"By selling off these properties we can support development projects at more successful sites in the network."

Mr Chalmers added that it was crucial for the YHA to follow a "best value" programme when disposing of the sites.

"We believe the most desirable option is to market our smaller properties first," he explained.

The YHA also has hostels in Kettlewell, Ingleton and Slaidburn.
