Sheffield Bankers 3 Ben Rhydding 1

IT was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Ben Rhydding men's first team. On Saturday, they travelled to league leaders Sheffield Bankers and in a fast, flowing, high quality match Bankers always had the edge and their Dutch international midfielder dominated proceedings.

Rhydding were indebted to goalkeeper Phil Weaver who, not for the first time this season, had an outstanding game. A Luke Lambert goal late on proved mere consolation.

On Sunday, Ben Rhydding entertained Durham University and ran out 3-2 winners, despite not playing at their best.

The Yorkshiremen began brightly and were good value for their early lead provided by Lambert. Minutes later Rhydding missed a golden opportunity to extend their advantage, as Matt Bell's penalty stroke thudded into the post.

The university students took heart and scored twice in five minutes. This Rhydding outfit are brimming with confidence and their prowess at set pieces proved decisive. First Mark Wood, then Mike Rippon, flicked the decisive goals over a grounded Durham 'keeper.

This latest victory lifted Ben Rhydding into second place in the North Premier League but well behind already promoted Sheffield Bankers.
