Bradford Film Festival drew to a close this weekend with organisers hailing it as the most successful yet.

Hollywood actor Danny Trejo was guest of honour at the closing gala of the 12th film festival.

Mr Trejo has starred alongside the likes of Al Pacino, Robert de Niro and Nicolas Cage in such films as Heat, Desperado and Con Air.

He also made a cameo appearance in popular US TV series Desperate Housewives.

He introduced the UK premiere of Champion, a documentary about his real-life rise from a youth on drugs and in prison to being one of Hollywood's most sought-after villains.

The gala capped off a well-received 16-day festival which saw a series of premieres, previews, tributes, retrospectives and star guests.

Some 12,000 movie fans attended the festival over the fortnight, a record high for the event.

A spokesman said: "We have had people attending from all over the world, from America, Australia, Germany, France and Portugal, as well as people from all around this area too.

"It has been well received as ever."

This year's festival attracted guest appearances from Clockwork Orange star Malcolm McDowell, comedy actor and writer Eric Sykes and Jeremy Dyson, one of the writers of the League of Gentlemen.

The festival opened with the UK premiere of The World's Fastest Indian starring Anthony Hopkins - based on the true story of New Zealander Burt Munro's quest to break a speed record on a 1920 Indian motorcycle.

One of the highlights came when the original cast of the cult movie Kes were reunited for the first time in years.

Director Ken Loach, actor Colin Welland and writer Barry Hines, whose novel A Kestrel in the Knave inspired the film, were all interviewed on stage before actor Dai Bradley, who starred in the movie as Billy Casper, took to the stage for a standing ovation.

Cast members from other classic films such as Zulu and Brassed Off also attended over the course of the fortnight.
