This year's Keighley Gala Queen will be surrounded by a bigger bouquet than ever before.

Organisers have for the first time recruited a "petal" to serve alongside the traditional rosebud. Oakbank School student Abigail Williams, from Oakworth, was on Sunday chosen as the queen.

Her attendants are rosebud Reagan Simmonds, junior queen Sarah Graham, page boy Ethan Michael Klein, petal Holly Wilson and princess Emily Coleman. Abigail will be crowned on Gala Day, Saturday, July 1, then join her entourage for the procession through Keighley to Victoria Park.

Gala spokeswoman Maureen Hudson said the "royal family" was chosen last Sunday afternoon during a competition at CJ's Bar in Low Mill Lane, Keighley.

She said Keighley's annual court of queens, normally held at the same time, was postponed due to the snow.

Maureen said: "One little girl turned up from Colne so we gave her a trophy anyway."

Maureen said about 30 children entered the competition for the various attendants, a good amount bearing in mind the weather.

She said a petal was chosen for the first time because of the amount of donations from local people and firms.

The gala had been given several dresses from the bridal shop, in East Parade, which closed recently, and tiaras from a woman in Oxenhope who imports them from Australia and America.
