Smokers who drop their cig ends on Keighley's streets face an on-the-spot £50 fine.

Bradford Council warns it is getting tough to stub out the litter menace.

And to help smokers avoid a ticket, it is offering people free pocked-sized containers -- shaped like buttocks -- in which they can keep their cig butts until they find a bin.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the council's executive member for the environment, said: "The plastic ashtrays may look quite comical but dropping cigarette ends is no joke.

"It costs taxpayers' money to remove the hundreds of cigarette butts that disfigure our streets every day. A £50 fine is a high price to pay for not walking to the bin or using a portable ashtray and disposing of cigarette ends properly."

The pink, white and purple containers can be obtained from council information centres or by phoning 01274 433582.

The council is currently carrying out its biggest ever campaign, known as the Big Sweep, to clean up the district.

Activities are being staged in communities across the area and the council is piloting other schemes, including chewing gum pouches, to support the effort.
