AT the grand old age of 21, ancient Benji must be the oldest dog in Barnoldswick.

Despite his grey hairs the elderly Lakeland terrier, who is an incredible 147 in doggie years, has boundless energy and enjoys at least one walk a day.

And just a few years ago when he was 18, Benji fathered five puppies with fox terrier Judy, who was a mere 10 years old.

Benji was born in 1985 and owners Lida Delbono and Eric Pickles, of Lower Park Street, have decided to celebrate his 21st in June.

Lida says that Benji lives off conventional dog food and treats, but does have a healthy fibre intake, enjoying a bowl of his favourite Weetabix cereal every morning.

He also keeps his bones and coat in good condition with cod liver oil supplements.

However, Lida said the secret of his old age was just "plenty of love, exercise and lots of attention".

She said: "Luckily so far he's only been to the vets twice in his lifetime and that wasn't for anything serious.

"He still plays and runs after other dogs, but I think his favourite game is chasing balloons. I just look after him and take him for a walk every day - I suppose he just lives for me!"
