FOUR Craven athletes helped Yorkshire to medal success in the UK Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships last Saturday (writes Roger Ingham).

Having finished the county's top senior runner in the English championships last month, Matthew Watson helped Yorkshire to the team title in the senior men's event at Nottingham's Wollaton Park.

The prestigious annual fixture featured 40 county and regional teams which - for seniors and under-20s - also served as Great Britain's trial for the World Cross-Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Watson, from Embsay, narrowly missed out on the cut for Japan but finished the second highest of the eight-strong Yorkshire team in a highly creditable 13th place.

Skipton Athletics Club's international Mary Wilkinson spearheaded the Yorkshire senior women's team to silver medals as she finished in 16th place.

Further Skipton AC-inspired Yorkshire medal success came in the under-13 boys where Billy Pinder and Alex Sinclair helped the county to team silvers.
