Morrisons is refusing to rule out the Government's proposed "traffic light" food labelling system.

The chain is considering various options for labelling food, among them the "red, amber and green" scheme.

The labelling, proposed by the Government's Food Standards Agency, will allow shoppers to see at a glance if a product is high in fat, salt or sugar.

A Morrisons spokesman said: "We are currently reviewing our labelling presentation and considering various signposting options.

"We are in contact with the Food Standards Agency and they are involved with our reviewing process."

The chain has two own label brands which it says are easily recognisable as healthier alternatives.

The spokesman said: "Eat Smart is a rapidly developing range of foods which cover a number of categories, where we control the calories and the use of fats, salt and sugar where possible.

"Much effort is placed on delivering a healthier range of foods without compromising on quality or flavour. Eat Smart does the thinking for you with every pack having the fat and calories clearly labelled on the front."

He said Morrisons was also introducing its 'Better Because It's...' range across the categories. It offers products that are lower in salt or lower in fat or lower in sugar than its equal core brand product for example cooking sauces and cheese."

The spokesman added that Morrisons was "still looking at all the options", including the proposed "traffic lights" scheme.
