Bradford completed a clean sweep in the West Yorkshire Schools' Individual Championship at Bradford Grammar School.

They won all eight titles from an encouraging entry of 48 boys and 16 girls, with Bradford Grammar School taking four titles, Beckfoot School two and Oakbank Sports College and St Joseph's Primary School, Keighley one each.

The under-16 boys' event contained two strong groups, Bryan Birkbeck (Salt Grammar) taking one section with David Wilcock (Bradford Grammar) coming

second.

James Berry (Bradford Grammar) won the other group with school colleague Patrick McIntosh the runner-up.

Birkbeck saw off McIntosh in one semi-final, while Berry defeated Wilcock in the other.

In the final, Birkbeck took the first 11-9 before Berry took the next three by the same score to lift the crown.

Beckfoot's Steffi Garrett was a clear

winner of the under-16 girls' event, beating all three of her opponents including schoolmates Helen Wakefield and Jessica Farrell.

Jenny Hallatt (Ralph Thoresby School) was second with Wakefield third and Farrell fourth.

Bradford Grammar pupils Sebastian Tullie, Richard Wall and Greg Burke each won a section in the under-13 boys, with Beckfoot's David Lidstone Green and Andrew Stead taking a runners-up berth alongside Chris Edmund (Wortley). A determined Lidstone Green beat Stead in the quarter-finals, while Burke saw off Edmund, and Lidstone Green then ousted Wall 12-10 in the fifth in the semi-final.

Tullie, who defeated Burke 3-0 in a semi-final, was Lidstone Green's final rival and beat him 3-0 in a competitive contest.

There was little doubt about Mary Fuller's prowess at under-13 girls' level and she took the title again, with Anisah Rahul (Bradford Grammar) second. Third and fourth were Jenny Lok and Stephanie Brown.

As in the under-13 boys, there was a large entry in the under-11 boys, again necessitating three groups.

St Joseph's Liam Chipman and Mark Preston and James Pinto (Lady Lane Park) topped the sections with Harry Brayshaw (Bradford Grammar) and Lady Lane Park's Chris Loadman and Oliver Priess runners-up.

In the quarter-finals, Brayshaw and Loadman came through at the expense

of Priess and Pinto - and it was an all-St Joseph's final as Chipman defeated Loadman and Preston snatched victory over Brayshaw 13-11 in the fifth.

Despite only being a Year Five pupil, Chipman took the title with a 3-0 triumph.

The under-11 girls' section was played as a round-robin as there were only seven competitors with Holly Medley (Bradford Grammar School) emerging as champion, defeating all six of her rivals.

Lily Bell and Alex Farrar both won four out of six but the tie-breaker was their meeting and Bell took that 11-7 in the fifth to take second place. Hannah Martin (Bradford Grammar) also defeated Bell but came fourth with three wins.

The smallest entry, however, was in the highest age group - the under-19 events for boys and girls.

Kathy Garrett (Beckfoot) qualified automatically for the English Schools' Individual Championships at Stoke in April.

And Greg Coaker (Bradford Grammar) joined her by beating Parkside's Andrew Bray and Michael Simpson, Bray taking the runners-up berth by defeating his schoolmate.
