Friends of a super-fit 20-year-old who died just weeks after complaining of a sore throat are to raise money in his name.

Keen footballer Christopher Garnett was treated for tonsillitis in the first week of January and diagnosed with glandular fever.

After treatment at Bradford Royal Infirmary he was sent home to recover after losing more than three stone in weight.

He was taken back to the hospital after his condition worsened and he developed a rare brain condition which left him with double vision and speech problems.

Doctors were unable to save his life.

Now close friend Kevin Larkin, 21, and fellow members of up-and-coming Bradford band Faze, are to hold an event dedicated to Chris on Wednesday at The Crown pub on Great Horton Road.

Bass player Kevin and Chris played five-a-side football for the pub.

"I decided I wanted to do something in memory of Chris," said Kevin, a Bradford University engineering student.

"It has been an unbelievable time which words cannot describe.

"He was a bubbly lad who was up for a good time. He was always a good laugh and would help anyone.

"Wednesday is really important. We want to get as many people there as we can and raise money for the intensive care unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

"Although he was not really into our music, Chris said that if there was anything he could do to either promote or plug our band then to let him know. I plan to reverse the favour."

Sharon Meeson, 49, landlady of The Crown, said: "He was a nice young man who often came in here with his friends.

"We were extremely saddened to hear of his death. We are going to go to town and raise as much as possible."

All funds raised on the night will be donated to the Intensive Care Unit at St Luke's Hospital, Bradford.

A sports quiz and raffle will be held before Faze start. The event begins at 7.30pm.
