A two-day crackdown on lawlessness in Bradford has seen more than 50 suspected criminals arrested.

The operation targeted a multitude of criminal acts ranging from unpaid fines to blackmail.

A total of 51 people were arrested for various matters over the course of the crackdown which has been hailed as a success by police chiefs.

The Telegraph & Argus yesterday reported on how the crackdown had seen officers focusing on taxi drivers to make sure their vehicles were road safe and that their documentation was up to date.

Det Insp Steve Hopwood of Bradford South Police, said: "The arrests were mainly to chase up outstanding warrants for high priority crime, such as robbery and theft from motor vehicles.

"From random stop and checks on vehicles we found one stolen car and seized other vehicles whose drivers were found to have no insurance.

"Much of it concentrated on taxis and other vehicle crime.

"Yesterday we arrested two taxi drivers and fines were given out by licensing officials to drivers not meeting the conditions of their licenses."

Vehicles were stopped in Leeds Road, Bradford, Bowling Back Lane and Shearbridge Road in Great Horton. As reported in the T&A earlier this week, rogue taxi drivers are to be clamped down on following an increase in public fears over poor driving and unsafe vehicles.

Unpaid fines were another area that was subjected to a crackdown, with addresses of people with outstanding fines visited by officers to collect cash. Det Insp Hopwood said: "Officers visited the addresses of people who have not paid and presented them with the option of paying the fine or being taken into custody."

A significant amount of cash was collected.

Warrants were also issued against people causing anti-social behavioural problems in the Buttershaw and Holme Wood areas of Bradford.

Det Insp Hopwood said crackdown days would continue throughout the year.
