Tongans 61 Ilkley B 0

Otley Tongans, with several players returning after injury, were able to pick from strength. They soon gave notice that in the near perfect conditions they intended to play an expansive game.

Winning quick ball and with slick handling Craig Jackson was put away but the cover caught him just short of the line. Keeping the pressure on Liam Back drove over and Tom Player converted.

Ilkley gained ground with some good tactical kicking but Otley were soon back on the attack and when Craig Jackson was given room to move he rounded the full-back for a good try.

Tom Boyle was having a lively game at scrum-half and he worked the short side from a breakdown for a good half-backs try.

Tongans were running everything now and Nick Forrester was up in support for a try which Player converted.

In the next attack a mis-move put Craig Jackson in for his second try. Ilkley were at full stretch trying to halt the flow but with Tom Boyle giving a superb service at the base there were further tries for Forrester, Luke Smith and Boyle. One conversion was added by Chris Burns.

The Ilkley half-time team talk seemed to produce results with the defence tighter from the re-start. Using a pick and drive policy they tried to stifle possession to the speedy Otley backs. This worked in the third quarter and in fact they were unlucky not to score, twice being held up over the line.

Eventually Otley raised the siege and took play to the other end for Player to dive over. There were further tries for Forrester and Richard Guthrie before the final whistle in a game played in an excellent spirit.

THIS was a closely contested game with the result in doubt right up to the final whistle. In the first-half Jamie Chappell scored two pushover tries and kicked a conversion to cancel the scores by the home side. Both sides exchanged penalties to make it 15-15.

In the closing minutes Jamie Chappell was just wide with a penalty but the home side made no mistake when they got the chance to clinch victory.
