Otley 25 London Welsh 28

On a day when Dave Scully scored his 100th league try, in a career which dates back to the onset of the league system, there was little else to celebrate at Cross Green.

Otley, as if to prove a point, once again demonstrated an expert ability to undo 80 minutes of hard work with a succession of basic errors which led to another home defeat.

After a good start they managed to let a team they handled comfortably earlier in the season come back and not only win but score four tries in doing so.

The fans who had witnessed their wonderful display against Newbury at the last home game could not believe their eyes.

All the good points of the game were overshadowed by their lack of cohesion at vital moments and as is their habit, eight minutes into added time after struggling to regain the lead.

There are of course extraneous circumstances. Simon Binns was missing and is likely to be so for some time and last week's replacement Chris Hyndman reported sick.

Ian Shuttleworth, who would normally have slotted in with ease, has been out with a thigh injury.

He was prevailed upon to play but not to risk kicking. Shuttleworth eventually limped off after 70 minutes. New boy Owen Edwards, already playing as a replacement full-back went to fly-half. Otley had started well.

Kitching made two wonderful catches at arms length and ran strongly back, the second time producing the ball when tackled allowing the forwards to drive before releasing.

Rob Whatmuff burst through and the ball went quickly out to Waisale Sovatabua who drew his man before handing on to Ben Steele.

He showed a fair turn of pace to dive over in the corner with some panache.

There appeared to be no danger when Otley were caught off-side at a maul on half-way but scrum-half Allen Chilten managed to steal a few metres to get behind the home forwards before taking a tap to race into the home 22 where, after gaining a five metre scrum and finding their drive held, Welsh opened up.

No 7 Paul Cox, standing wide, brushed aside a tackle to go over, Dylan Pugh converting.

Within three minutes Otley were back in front. Whatmuff, from a slick reverse pass from Shuttleworth, side-stepped his way over for Kitching to convert.

The full-back added a couple of penalties and Otley were looking comfortable until, with his side under pressure, skipper Glen Wilson was yellow carded for his comments to the referee. With a man short at a five metre scrum they succumbed to a try from No 8 Matt Fitzgerald, converted by Pugh.

Welsh made their numerical advantage count and Otley were under siege. Right on Wilson's return they went ahead whe Fitzgerald surged through the middle and full-back Mark Meenan raced in at the corner, Pugh adding a fine conversion.

Blatant obstruction on Scully earned prop Colm Hannon a yellow card. In his absence Scully joined his forwards as they drove to the line and sneaked his try, Kitching converted.

When on 83 minutes Chilton was also shown a yellow Otley were looking to play out the final minutes only to concede a penalty which was put into the corner from where hooker Chris Richie was driven over. Pugh converted from wide out.

l On Saturday Otley make their first visit to Doncaster who are finding life tough in their inaugural year in National One. A win there is critical. Who feels they most need the points?
