Plans for a multi-million-pound world class sports village at Odsal village have been redesigned following the decision to hold the 2012 Olympic games in London.

Architects have gone back to the drawing board to design a scheme with the capacity to accommodate a full Olympic team and its entourage.

A planning application for the scheme was expected to be submitted last summer. But the Council says it has been delayed to allow the massive scheme to be redesigned.

The authority has already said it hopes to cash in on the Olympic games by having facilities ready to use as training camps for athletes.

The proposal, which would result in the long-awaited redevelopment of the home of the Bradford Bulls, has already won the backing of Sport England and Government regeneration agency Yorkshire Forward.

There are plans for a swimming pool, new pitch, changing facilities and stand for Bradford Park Avenue Football Club, an eight-lane athletics track, three outdoor playing pitches with synthetic surfaces and one grass pitch. There are also proposals for a cricket field, pavilion and cycle track.

The club and Bradford Council are working in partnership to bring the scheme to fruition and a planning application was said to be imminent just before London won its bid for the Games.

Today Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration, Councillor Simon Cooke, said: "Extensive redesign work has been done, working with Sport England, and the planning application has been delayed."

He said options including measures to accommodate a substantial Olympic team would be considered at the Council's executive committee on March 21. But Coun Cooke added the main scheme was basically the same and still included the removal of the existing Horsfall Playing Fields.

A major campaign was launched to save the playing fields last year by members of the public who also involved the National Playing Fields Association. But Coun Cooke said the scheme still could not go ahead without the inclusion of the playing field land.

Peter Hunt, acting chairman of Bradford Bulls, said: "I am eagerly awaiting the Council's decision and hope it gives the go ahead."
