The Cougars insist they don't fear opponents Rochdale, with boss Peter Roe maintaining: Do the basics right and anything can happen.

His side face opposition from LHF Healthplan National League One for the second successive week in the Northern Rail Cup tomorrow.

In going down 38-10 at Halifax, Roe's young team showed plenty of spirit but not enough composure and discipline.

He is hoping to see more of that at Cougar Park tomorrow.

"Rochdale are another team with ambition and plenty of size," said Roe. "They are a big side and we're still in the development stage but all I want my team to do is concentrate on the little things.

"What people discuss as big things, like scoring tries and line breaks, they all come from getting the little things right.

"The effort grade for last week was ten out of ten but we've got to improve our discipline and completion rates. That will help us have to do less tackling.

"We had to put in a lot of defence against a big side at Halifax and if you carry on doing that you're not going to win the game."

Rochdale - who have former Cougars Phil Cantillon, Matty Firth and Paul Owen in their ranks, along with plenty of Super League experience - saw their opener against Oldham postponed last weekend. That meant they had to play on Wednesday night, winning a tight tussle 18-16 at Spotland which could leave them jaded tomorrow.

But, never being realistic challengers for the Northern Rail Cup, Roe's side have their eyes on the start of the League Two campaign in April, although he added: "This is a wonderful competition for clubs like us as it gives us chance to look at

players.

"That's what we're doing." Sam Gardner misses the next two games due to work commitments so former Featherstone player Andrew Jackson gets a shot on the wing.

Roe will once more include second row Mark Stubley, who made his debut at Halifax after completing a one-month loan deal.

"He had a few games with Dewsbury last season. Hunslet have signed him this time and loaned him out to us, which is a very charitable offering," said the coach, who is continuing his search for more beef up front.

"We need more size and back-up in the pack as we are lightweight.

"We gave opportunities to (former winger) Karl Smith and Tom Palmer last Sunday who have never really played in the second row at this level and lack experience.

"We've got someone in New Zealand keeping an eye out for players over there for us but we haven't got much to play with and they have to fit the criteria."
