The leader of a £7 million heroin gang was arrested in his Bradford offices in a national drugs bust, a jury was told.

It is alleged that Khalid Malik was at the head of a conspiracy to distribute and sell the drug in West Yorkshire.

A jury was told yesterday that Malik, who drove a BMW and a black Lamborghini, met his co-accused at restaurants in Bradford and Rawdon while planning the major drugs crime.

Malik, 34, of Ridge Close, Guiseley, denies conspiracy to supply heroin between September 1, 2004, and May 30, 2005.

In the dock with him on the same charge are Londoners Aras Karkukai and Naveed Butt.

Prosecutor Andrew Lees said that Malik was arrested on May 12, the same day that the National Crime Squad swooped on a house in Leytonstone, east London.

It contained 130kg of heroin with a street value of more than £7 million, the jury at Leeds Crown Court was told.

Mr Lees said that Malik was the head of the organised crime gang.

He said: "He conspired with his co-accused to arrange for the supply of heroin for onward distribution and sale in West Yorkshire."

Mr Lees said that £40,000 cash was found in a floor safe at the Unique Car Care in Gibson Street, Bradford, where Malik was arrested.

Police also seized anti-surveillance equipment, four mobile phones and heavy duty body armour.

Mr Lees said that Malik used at least one pseudonym and that bank notes in his possession had more than the usual quantity of heroin on them.

Malik's girlfriend told the police that he would bring home large amounts of cash and she would help him to count it. She said he paid for a flat in Apperley Court, Bradford, and for her to go on a beauty training course.

He told her his money came from dealing in cars, said Mr Lees.

The jury saw video footage of alleged meetings between Malik and his co-conspirators in Bradford, Rawdon, Leeds and London.

The trial continues.
