Bradford seems to produce an endless supply of talented youngsters - pop stars, actors and West End stars - and the next generation of big names is treading the Alhambra boards this week.

Stage 84's glittering show, celebrating the best of musical theatre, was a triumph. A cast of 250 talented youngsters, aged three upwards, stormed along a slick, fast-moving journey through showstopping song-and-dance numbers, haunting ballads and comedy monologues.

Every performance was hugely entertaining and looked tremendous, from the feelgood opening, a medley from Anything Goes, to the spectacular finale from The Lion King. The whole show was a riot of colour, with stunning costumes.

Each musical section was a tribute to a West End show. The Cats routine saw the stage come alive with graceful, agile creatures as every child turned feline, and Saturday Night Fever captured the raw energy of a 70s disco dance floor.

Impressive performances of an Elvis Lives medley and Carly Simon's rousing Let the River Run revealed the youngsters' singing talents, and Evita was stylish and atmospheric, showcasing their dramatic range.

The younger children, some barely out of nappies, brought the house down with a fabulous Disney selection and a heart-melting performance of Billy Joel's Uptown Girl, which saw a row of little girls in white frilly dresses serenaded by a gang of little boys in red overalls and baseball caps. Beyond cute. Pulling off such impressive dance routines in such a big venue was quite an achievement for those tots.

Peppered among the musical numbers were delightful poems and monologues including a lovely excerpt from A Midsummer Night's Dream, performed with a Yorkshire twist.

A superb cast includes Jack P Shepherd, alias David Platt in Coronation Street, and Grange Hill star Jonathan Dixon, who proved a great comic double act performing Hakuna Matata from The Lion King. Special mention also to Sophie Wyzoczanski, Matthew Zina and Katie Griffiths.

A magical show as good as any professional production on the Alhambra stage.

Runs until Saturday.
