After all their trials and tribulations of the past decade, which has included several relegations and the club almost going under, there is a real spring in the step now at Wibsey.

Last Saturday they notched their first win of the season in Yorkshire Division Five North West, defeating Thirsk 12-0 at home, through tries by centre Jamie Vogel and scrum half Karl Walker, full back Steve Hadcroft adding a conversion.

And, while it wasn't enough to haul Wibsey off the bottom of the table, they are now in a group of four teams on two points with only points difference keeping them at the basement.

Club secretary Paul Garside, who doubles up as a prop replacement, is certainly chipper, saying: "We didn't have a coach last season but now we have four.

"Corky (Ian Gregson) is looking after the forwards, Ian Walker is looking after the backs, and Pete May and Dave Hartley are sorting out the fitness side of things.

"Also Rob Greenwood is taking the captaincy responsibilities very seriously and we are taking a lead from him."

Garside added: "The improvement we have shown in fitness over the past four to six weeks has been fantastic.

"That certainly helped us last week in the second half. We strangled the life out of Thirsk, not letting them out of their half. Our young lads just didn't let them breathe."

Tomorrow Wibsey have a home derby against third-placed Burley - another club who have known troubled times recently.

Garside said: "They beat Thirsk by a smiliar margin to us and also defeated Harrogate Pythons, who we should have beaten. I am expecting a close game but it is one that we can win if we play as well as we did last week."

Wibsey await late fitness tests on second rows Neil Carter (trapped nerve) and his brother Mark (Achilles injury suffered in training on Tuesday).

Definitely unavailable, however, is Hadcroft, so Dan Horsfall moves to full back with Brad McHale coming in at centre.

Bradford & Bingley coach Geoff Wappett is treating last week's 25-3 National League Three North defeat at Macclesfield as a blip.

"These things happen in sport sometimes," he said. "We just hope that normal service will be resumed as quickly as possible."

The Bees switch Ben Greaves to partner his brother Phil in the centres at home to Kendal, Joe Simpson reverting to full back and Mark Kirkby returning on the wing.

Cleckheaton have the job of trying to stop Macc this week at Moorend, and recall the influential Chris Quinn at fly half after calf trouble.

Wharfedale, at Manchester in National League Two, bring teenage scrum half James Doherty on to the bench to give Chris Meehan a full game for the second team.

Dave Howcroft makes a timely return for Bradford Salem at home to Pontefract in Yorkshire One, while fellow scrum half Scott Amos is back for Keighley at home to Sheffield Tigers.
