Gary Brook takes his side to another promotion-seeking club tomorrow with yet another signing under his belt.

Former Avenue crowd favourite Craig Smith, released by Guiseley a couple of weeks ago, has re-signed and could be playing at Burscough.

The right-sided midfielder was not a favourite of former boss Carl Shutt and was shown the door last season.

Leigh RMI put seven days' notice of approach on Smith but Shutt told Leigh they could speak to him immediately and he was quickly transferred.

Smith could have played on Wednesday against Frickley Athletic but Avenue realised too late that his release papers from Guiseley had not been sent off.

If he plays tomorrow he will be the 36th player used by Brook in the first team this season.

Smith said: "I was under the impression the release papers had been sorted but obviously they hadn't. Avenue are doing well and I'm looking forward to being involved again.

"It was a good experience playing for Leigh in the Conference but they had already been relegated when I signed for them last season.

"I hope the fans here will be happy to see me back. I have a lot of mates playing here - it is a big, talented squad.

"There is a really good team spirit and Avenue have a great chance of reaching the play-offs."

Shutt said of Smith: "Craig is a very

talented player but a bit of an enigma."

Avenue must quickly shake off the disappointment of losing 4-1 to second-placed Frickley in midweek - their first home defeat of the season.

They are still sixth in the table and have a chance of overhauling Burscough, who are a point above them.
