Cross Hills has the best Royal Mail sales team in the country.

Postmistress Sharon Latta and her husband Jack were left speechless when they scooped the national sales title in this year's Best Post Office Awards.

The award came after the couple won the regional title under the same category.

They were invited to London last week to hear the national results and couldn't believe it when the decision was announced.

Mr Latta said: "When we saw all the different offices on the screen, with automatic doors and such like, little Cross Hills just didn't seem to stand a chance.

"But we were stunned when they called out our names. It shows we must be doing something right."

The couple received a gold "gong" which will take pride of place at their Prospect Street office. They will also receive vouchers worth £1,500.

Mrs Latta has worked in the post office for nearly 23 years.

Post Office chief executive David Mills said: "The awards are a showcase for the best post offices nationwide. The record number of entries confirms how communities large and small around the country not only rely on their local post offices but also appreciate and value the service they receive from our people.

"The Post Office, in turn, greatly values its customers. We are determined to provide an even better service in future.

"Our people are at the heart of everything we do. I am proud to pay tribute to the winners - they deserve the accolades they have received, not just from the Post Office but from their customers."
