Twenty-five-old Simon Bailey won the Withens Skyline Fell Race on Sunday.

Competitors covered seven-miles and climbed 1,000 feet on the course which started and finished at Penistone Hill, Haworth.

Bailey sat in behind Mark Horrocks and Karl Gray until the famous Bronte Bridge and the short steep climb to Bronte Waterfall when he kicked for the finish line, knowing the rest of the route was clearly marked.

First local was Keighley & Craven's Steve McDermott (above) with Bingley Harrier's Robin Bradbury, from Haworth, hot on his heels in 24th place.

Over 90 juniors contested the quarry races in wet conditions, with Emily Throup, of Wharfedale, setting a new girls' under 12 record.

She was the fifth junior to finish in a time of seven minutes 29 seconds, knocking 15 seconds off the old record. She finished sixth in the Under 12 English Championship.

Results: 1 Simon Bailey (Mercia), 42.09, 2 Karl Gray (Calder Valley), 43.00; 3 and first Over 40 Mark Horrocks (Wharfedale), 43.07.
