Gomersal and Cleckheaton Football Club's under-sevens, also known as the Falcons, have soared to another title.

The youngsters from the Keybury League made it three victories in as many events when they won the prestigious Leeds United Tournament at the club's Thorp Arch training ground near Wetherby.

Teams were competing from as far afield as Hull, York, Wrenthorpe and Leeds, and the Falcons completed their trophy hat-trick by emerging from the ten-team event which was split into two groups.

A common problem at this young age group is that of players clustering around the ball, but that was dispelled from the outset with players using the space on the pitches and maintaining their positions.

And, thanks also to the contribution of United's Academy staff, matches were played in a great spirit, the terrific atmosphere generated being enjoyed by players, coaches and spectators alike.

Considering they went on to win their section, the Falcons began tentatively with a goalless draw against Garforth Villa.

However, after that the Gomersal and Cleckheaton outfit blossomed, successive victories over Ilkley, York Elite and Wrenthorpe putting them on top of their group and into the final.

There they met a tenacious opponents from Colton, and the decider began at a fair lick as both sides probed for an edge.

Following a rare Falcons mistake, Colton led 1-0 at half-time. But, as the second half showed a continuance of hard work and fine passing, Declan Seddon equalised with a stunning volley.

The contest then remained very tight until full time, with neither side being able to grab a winner.

Tension was heightened in sudden-death extra time, with both teams having to remove a player every minute until only a goalkeeper and two outfield players remained.

Colton broke away but were denied by a fantastic save from Sam Whittington, who dived at the feet of an opponent.

Falcons then stepped up the pressure, Lewis Broadfoot and Jake Darby forcing Colton to defend deep.

The duo created a number of chances before Darby threaded a through pass and Broadfoot hit a sweet shot across the goal and inside the far post.

Each Falcons player received a Leeds United football shirt and a certificate, and the team got a trophy.

The winning line-up was Whittington, Jack Bottomley, Jordan Naylor, Oliver Mulcahy, Darby, Jack Carney, Broadfoot, George Senior and Seddon. Coaches were Allan Darby, Ian Bottomley, Daryl Senior and Mark Whittington and the victory came after successes at Bradford Park Avenue an Bolton Woods.
