The appalling weather conditions on Saturday night certainly hit the attendance at the 29th annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display organised by the Ilkley Moor Lions Club at the East Holmes Fields.

Event-goers numbered hundreds instead of the usual thousands but they were still treated to a magical display which brought the usual gasps from the crowd.

The bonfire of old pallets provided by Garnetts of Otley and delivered by Jefferies Transport of Otley provided a warm welcome. The Fireworks were fired by Pyro 2000 and provided an excellent, colourful and very entertaining show.

The main sponsor of the event was the Po Sang Chinese Restaurant. There were seven main sequences in the firework display and the myriad of comets, Roman candles, bombettes, shells, crackling flowers and barrages were sponsored by the Rombalds Hotel and Restaurant, The Candy Box, Pinsharp Photo Services, La Sila Restaurant, Hillfoot Steel Group Ltd, Bluebird International Travel and the Red Lion pub in Burley-in-Wharfedale.

There was also a small fair to attract the youngsters after the firework display.

One of the Organisers, Lion Jim Shelton, said: "Our thanks are expressed to the Wharfedale Squadron Air Training Corps without whose help the bonfire could not be built and for their control of the car parking; the St John Ambulance Brigade for their attendance in case of accident; and to the police for their control of traffic and general attendance.

"As always the crowd was very well behaved which enabled everyone to enjoy their evening. An excellent commentary was given by Bill Crowther and thanks are expressed to all who supported the effort in any way and made the event such a success."

The Ilkley Moor Lions' next events will be a Soft Toy Tombola Stall at a Charity event at the Clark Foley Centre on November 26 and their annual 'Re-cycled Teenagers' (Over 70s) Christmas Party at the Clark Foley Centre on December 3.

Anyone interested is asked to call (01943) 862352. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the Red Lion, Burley-in-Wharfedale at 8pm.
