Scrum half Carl Smith scored two second-half tries to guide Queensbury through to the quarter-finals of the Tetley's Yorkshire County Cup at Westgate Redoubt.

Bury included new signing former Sheffield pro prop John Bruce on the subs bench and it was honours even in the early stages against a Westgate outfit prompted by former Great Britain and Castleford

legend Dean Sampson.

Bury struck the all-important first blow when second row forward Kristian Freibach powered over for the only score of the half.

Smith stepped up to the plate on the restart and added his second at the final whistle - both converted by stand off Johnny Feather - to earn the 16-4 victory and a home tie against Townville Tigers on November 5.

Clayton are still at the bottom of the Premier Division following a 19-8 defeat at Brighouse Rangers.

The Villagers were all square 4-4 at half- time after an Eddie Harney special, and speedy wingman Johnny Caston kept them in the hunt with another in the second half. Two more efforts were disallowed but coach Richard Hesletine made no excuses, declaring Rangers the better side.

In Division One, Birkenshaw recorded an impressive 22-18 home win over much fancied Kippax Welfare. Birky trailed 12-6 at the break following a Richard Rhodes touchdown, converted by Matt Honeysett.

Centre Morton Robinson and debutant packman Jack Watson put them back in the picture and Honeysett added to his three conversions when he pounced for the winner at the death.

Second-placed Victoria Rangers crashed 34-22 at Dodworth. Centre Danny Dixon was unlucky to be on the losing side,

notching four tries in a man-of-the-match performance. Stand off Len Dalladay kicked three goals.

Queensbury A are still searching for their first Division Two success after the 16-6 home loss against Liversedge. Substitute Tom Middleton claimed the only Bury try and loose forward Brett Marriott added the extra two. Four efforts were ruled out for failing to plant the ball on the whitewash.

Undercliffe won 14-12 in the Division Three derby at Bank Top Harriers while Wyke were excellent value in the 44-14 win at Drighlington A in Division Four. Wingman Paul Woodhead produced a cracking hat-trick for the black and whites and Craig Hillam, Alan Binns, Paul Coates, James Barraclough and James Wild followed his example. Coates also kicked six conversions.

Clayton A kept their unbeaten Division Six record in tact with a 36-13 victory against Wibsey Warriors at Lidget Green. Wing Richard Bailey scored the pick of the tries and Dan Belshaw kicked 14 points. Wyke A went down 28-10 to Sportsman Spartans at Towngate.
