Wakefield-Emley 1

Guiseley 3

GUISELEY marked their 600th encounter in the Northern Premier League with a fine win over Yorkshire rivals Wakefield-Emley.

Their 600th game in this league saw them notch their 262nd win having drawn 160 and lost 178. They have scored 973 goals and conceded 792. They look forward to notching their 1000th NPL goal in the current season.

With several players still out through injury Neil Parsley once again shuffled his pack with Lee Connor on the bench after a bout of food poisoning. Danny Ellis returned after suspension and David Cooke dropped to the bench.

The on-loan Richard Chattoe started in midfield for Wakefield-Emley but had a subdued game against his club colleagues.

Guiseley opened brightly without really threatening the home goal. Richard Kettlewell crashed a free-kick against the bar to keep Matt Taylor alert in the Guiseley goal.

Guiseley eventually took a deserved lead on 22 minutes when a headed clearance from a corner by Roy Stamer found Dave Henry hovering on the edge of the area. He hit a superb drive past David Stockdale.

Neil Parsley was then banished from the technical area to the stand for comments made to the referee.

Wakefield-Emley levelled on 50 minutes when Christian Fox curled a free-kick round the defensive wall leaving Taylor rooted to the spot.

Adam Muller should have put the home side ahead but failed to get any power behind his header from five yards after being left unmarked at the far post. Simon Parke blasted the ball wide twice from good positions and Roy Stamer tested Stockdale with a crisp shot.

Sam Denton was then booked for an innocuous challenge. Matty Smithard - who had caused constant problems down the right - recovered a seemingly lost ball and crossed for Jez Illingworth to eventually get in a low shot that brought a point blank save from Stockdale.

From the resulting melee Mark Stuart lifted his shot over the bar.

David Cooke came on for Smithard before Henry picked up a loose ball in midfield, beat two defenders and shot wide of the 'keeper from 12 yards to restore Guiseley's lead.

Guiseley continued to push the ball down the flanks as Stamer was given acres of space and one of his crosses found Illingworth but the midfielder's effort bounced of the bar.

As the minutes ticked away Guiseley gained further reward for their endeavours as Cooke robbed Nicky Wood, evaded Stockdale and stroked the ball into the empty net to seal a well deserved three points for Guiseley.

Guiseley are without a game on Saturday but the Reserves entertain Chorley (3 pm).
