Bradford Sunday Alliance side Whetley Lane made a successful return to the Carlsberg FA Sunday Cup after a ten-year absence by beating Hartlepool Athletic Supporters 2-0 in the first round at Manningham Mills.

Whetley were guilty of several first-half misses and survived some anxious moments in defence.

They took the lead through Kevin Towey, who latched on to a through-ball from Carl Treney shortly after the interval.

The second goal was always going to be crucial and after both Towey and Simon Park had gone near, Towey's second goal five minutes from time assured Whetley's passage into round two.

There were goals galore at Chester City, where home side Clifton and Fairweather Green met for the third time in four seasons.

The old adversaries shared 12 goals, with the score 4-4 after full-time and 6-6 after extra-time.

In the sudden death penalty shoot-out, Fairweather - for whom defender Peter Pilgrim hit his first hat-trick - came away victorious when Clifton missed their first two spot-kicks.

To crown an unsuccessful day for Hartlepool sides, Queensbury were victorious for the first time in the competition with a 2-1 win over Hartlepool Rugby Club.

Caught cold with a goal in the first minute, Queensbury played some of their best football of the season. They levelled through Darrell Fletcher just before half-time and scored the winner from

a bullet header by Andy Blackett.

Competing in one of the hardest ties in the round, cup debutants Ring O'Bells Shipley were 2-1 winners in Warrington at Halton Arms Sports.

Bells took to the competition like a duck to water, going in front through Simon Topp and captain Ryan Dean, and they kept their composure when Halton pulled a goal back late on.

Also making a useful debut were Buttershaw White Star, who were unlucky not to get anything out of their game against Brow. There was nothing between the sides in a tight affair until Brow defender and captain Danny Brooks headed the only goal from a corner on 75 minutes.

Bolton Woods were 2-0 down after 20 minutes but dominated the second half of their tie with Carrs Hotel (Prescott) but were only able to reduce the arrears by one from leading scorer Andy Howland.

Oakenshaw also failed to survive past the first round, going down 3-1 to Queenspark.

While their championship rivals Oakworth were extending their 100 per cent record to six games in Division 1B, Crown Wyke had a great day out in Leeds in the first round of the West Riding County Cup, winning 4-0 at Hope Inn.

Goals came from Frank Cullen (2), Chris Edmondson and Jordan Missen.

There was no luck for Queensbridge at Wharfedale League Club Crossflatts. They were 3-0 down at half-time and had two men red-carded after the change-round as they crumbled 6-0.

In an all-Alliance clash, White Eagles missed several first-half chances before going down 3-0 to Eccleshill Sunday. Goals came from Ian Horrocks (2) and Ben Hardy.

Oddfellows Athletic conceded two goals early on, dominated afterwards but could only pull one back through Paul Taylor as they lost to Wakefield League Premier Division side New Wheel.

Waggoners were no match for Thornhill Lees, who romped to a 15-0 victory.

Westwood finally shook off a run of heavy defeats to beat Leeds Club Northern Star

3-1 with goals from John Hart (2) and Andy Malone.

Eastward were 4-3 up in a high-scoring first half with enough chances to earn a

passage to round two but were pipped 5-4 by visitors GNC Khalsa. Not as fluent as normal, Wyke Wanderers still had too much for 1A opposition White Horse. Andy Beckwith and Kev Archer shared doubles in a 7-2 win.

West Bowling went down

5-2 at HT Sports Leeds while Bradford Park Avenue Rangers progressed despite missing two penalties, beating Bradshaw Phoenix 4-0.

Birkenshaw proved too strong in the last quarter against Ventus Sports, who held the Heavy Woollen side to 2-2 at the change-round before falling away 4-2.

In the all-Alliance Premier Division clash at Holme Wood, the two Marks, Booth and Wilcox, hit goals in Athletic's 4-1 win over Crown.
