A stunning goal from Chris Wood, worthy of winning any game, saw Eccleshill United claim all three points from visitors Selby Town in their Northern Counties East Premier Division clash.

Despite the enormous effort and endeavour from both sides, the number of attempts on goal was very low.

The longer the contest went on the more it looked like one moment of class or an individual error would

settle it.

Wood, who had been a handful for the Town defence throughout, provided that special split second of brilliance.

Midway through the second half he hit a shot on the run from almost 30 yards that flew in.

"We weren't at the races for most of the game but we have got the win," said delighted United boss Ray Price.

"It was a fantastic strike from Woody - but it needed to be to beat their

goalkeeper. He had a lot more to do than our keeper Craig Bates. For all their possession, Selby didn't exactly create many chances.

"We haven't been at our best but we have taken the points and the bit of luck we have had has been due.

"We have had our share of bad luck this season so it's time a result went for us and this is a big one that keeps us in touch with the leading pack.

"It should give the lads a boost in confidence and we will see if we can

capitalise on that and put a run of results together and get back into the top group."

The first chance of the game fell to Ian Twitchen, last season's leading scorer at Eccleshill.

The striker switched clubs in the summer, signing for Selby and pocketing a wage rise in the process.

His thunderous sixth-minute shot lacked only direction as it fizzed just wide of the foot of Bates' right-hand post.

Almost a quarter of an hour had elapsed before the home side mustered a threat.

Having forced a corner, the ball was flicked on and Town's highly-rated keeper Adam Mitchell got up well to claim under pressure from Matt Tinsley.

Minutes later Tinsley headed straight at Mitchell from a James Hanson cross.

Having made his senior debut for United the previous Saturday, Hanson was playing his third game in eight days and the youngster looked sharp and troublesome.

He formed a fearsome forward partnership with Wood.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Hanson would surely have capped his display with a goal but for a timely interception.

Wood's low centre was aimed for the unmarked Hanson but Town centre back Kev Graham just got his studs on the ball and Mitchell collected.

Bates made a good save before Wood's winner - and he prevented Selby from pinching a draw with a superb point-blank stop to deny Twitchen when a deflected cross looped in the air and dropped invitingly at the far post.
