This action-packed match had everything - on and off the pitch!

Avenue won the game with virtually the last kick of the game and there were two penalties plus two sendings off for good measure.

Supporters also had to wait an hour for the second half to start - instead of the usual 15 minutes - after a tunnel incident left Avenue midfielder Greg Challender with a suspected broken jaw.

The referee, who did not witness the incident, called for the police.

Back on the pitch, Avenue and Witton were drawing 1-1 at half-time.

Mike Moseley had given the home side a 32nd-minute lead when the Avenue defence let him get away and he calmly shot across Craig Parry and into the

corner of the net.

But Avenue were on terms a couple of minutes later when Phil Hadland jinked past two defenders before he was hauled down and Challender blasted in from the penalty spot.

When the second half finally got under way after numerous tannoy announcements had informed the crowd of very

little, it was Witton who regained the lead.

Brian Pritchard was left unmarked at a free-kick and he rose majestically to head past Parry.

Avenue were without Challender, who was unable to resume after the interval and was replaced by James Cough-brough.

But again they hit back and it was Hadland once more who was hauled down in the box as he closed in on goal.

Pritchard scythed him down and was sent off. Danny Walsh fired confidently past Jon Kennedy from the spot.

The drama continued when Witton lost their second centre back, Tom Spearitt, who was booked for dissent and dismissed for his second bookable offence.

That led to a siege on the Witton goal akin to the Alamo, with just about every outfield player having a pop at goal.

Hadland crashed a header against the bar and Brook Newton somehow skied over from a yard.

To their credit, Avenue continued to play controlled football, moving the ball to the flanks where Newton on the left and Andy Quinn on the right could do the damage.

Newton made up for his glaring miss when, with seconds left on the clock, he fired in the winner from an acute angle.

This was Avenue's second win within a few days. Three points against Farsley Celtic on Wednesday at Horsfall Stadium would put them in among the leading pack.
