Nicky Summerbee could return to the scene of one of his greatest City moments on Friday - playing against the Bantams.

The 34-year-old winger is hoping to earn a contract with Tranmere, where he has been training since last week.

And it might happen in time for Summerbee to square up against his former club at Prenton Park.

That will rekindle memories of his electric performance in City's amazing 5-4 victory last year. The veteran smashed in a spectacular 30-yard free-kick and provided the cross for David Wetherall's stoppage-time winner.

He also claimed the assist for Dean Windass to equalise when the two sides met at Valley Parade in February.

Summerbee, who left City in April, had a short non-contract spell with Swindon at the start of the season and played once against Nottingham Forest. But a lack of finances at the County Ground ruled out the chance of a permanent deal.

Now the free agent could make Tranmere his ninth club.

Boss Brian Little has let youngster Paul Brown out on loan, freeing up a slot on the right wing. And Summerbee has made the right impression so far. Little said: "Nicky did especially well in training yesterday. It is what I'm looking for from him in terms of getting used to the players here and getting himself fitter.

"I would like to think the quality he has will shine through.

"Having lost Paul we are a wide man short so Nicky fits the bill if everything works out."

Meanwhile, City midfielder Tom Penford will head abroad for experience. He is set to join Skjold, who are currently bottom of the Danish first division, until the end of their season in November.
