Flights to Pakistan from Leeds-Bradford airport have been suspended amid reports the airline is facing financial difficulties.

Flights were suddenly suspended last Friday evening.

About 400 travellers are believed to be stranded abroad.

Swefly, which started the popular flights from Leeds-Bradford to Lahore, via Stockholm, earlier this summer, said they have been cancelled due to "present circumstances".

The airline has not provided any more information to the airport bosses at Leeds-Bradford.

But reports in Sweden say the company is looking for more cash to head off bankruptcy.

Notes have reportedly gone up on the Swefly office door at Lahore airport.

The company has also cancelled its flights from Luton to Lahore.

A statement on the Leeds-Bradford Airport website says: "The Swefly Company Group has decided to cancel all flights concerning Lahore from 6pm on Friday, September 2, until further notice due to present circumstances."

An airport spokesman said it had had no other information confirmed.

A spokesman at Lahore airport said the reason for the suspensions was not known and he referred inquiries to the airline.

The Swefly flights to Pakistan from Leeds-Bradford three times a week via Stockholm, had proved a huge success.

Within weeks of starting the service the airline had to be upgraded to a bigger aircraft to cope with the demand for seats.

It is understood talks were going ahead in Sweden yesterday in a bid to solve the situation. A Swefly spokesman said more information would be released later.
