A Bradford teenager has died after being knocked down by a car on the Greek island of Zante.

Andrew Nutton, 19, was on holiday with five pals when he was struck by the vehicle driven by a Greek man as they returned from a night out.

Andrew, an apprentice engineer with Bradford Tools in Thornton Road, was first taken to a hospital on the island before being flown to a hospital in Athens.

His parents Rob and Sue flew out to be at his side as soon as they were informed of the accident.

Mr Nutton, of Cheltenham Road, Wrose, said they were initially told that Andrew had a fractured skull.

His wife said: "We were just praying he would be all right. It was just awful."

They arrived in Athens as Andrew was being transferred to another hospital with an intensive care unit.

After initial difficulties in getting to see Andrew, Mr and Mrs Nutton were told by Greek doctors that their son had suffered massive head injuries and that the next 24 hours would be critical because his brain was still swelling.

As Andrew's condition worsened they were informed by doctors that there was little prospect of him surviving and they were at his side when he died last Friday.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "I can confirm that a British national died in hospital on Friday, September 2, following a road traffic accident on Sunday, August 28. The Greek police are investigating."

Andrew's sister Clare, 21, said that her brother was the type of person who had to make everybody laugh.

"He was really popular with lots of friends," she said.

Charlotte Dean, 19, Andrew's girlfriend of two-and-a-half-years, was also struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

"This is unbelievable and horrific," said Charlotte, of Thornton Road, Thornton, Bradford.

The family are still waiting to hear when Andrew's body and belongings can be flown back to Britain so they can make the funeral arrangements.

Mrs Nutton said that she just wanted to see her son again.

"We love him so much," she said.

Mr Nutton said: "He seemed to be loved by everybody."

Zante, also known as Zakinthos, is one of the largest Greek islands and is only 8.5 miles away from the island of Kefalonia.

The island is popular with British tourists with the town of Laganas containing plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants. It is particularly popular with younger holidaymakers.
