A cub scout group will soon be set to take a hike - thanks to a grant scheme run by Yorkshire Water and the Telegraph & Argus.

The 39th Bradford South Scout Group has scooped £500 as part of the Yorkshire Water Community Award scheme.

The money will be spend on hiking and expedition equipment such as sleeping bags and rucksacks.

Margaret Beanland, leader of the Little Horton group, which caters for youngsters aged from six to 18 years-old, said she was thrilled with the award.

"This is very exciting, because some of the people in the area cannot afford these things.

"Sometimes when we organise expeditions some of the youngsters will say their parents can't afford the equipment for the trip.

"To know they will be able to be funded will be lovely for them."

The group is in three divisions - Beavers for six to eight year-olds, Cubs for eight to ten-and-a-half year-olds and Scouts and Explorers for the older youngsters and meetings take place weekly.

Mrs Beanland said all of the children take part in activities wherever possible.

"We have young people in our group with varying disabilities who we encourage to participate to their full potential," she said.

Any money left over will be spent on equipment for the weekly activities.

The Water works Community Award scheme presents £500 to a project each month to recognise and reward community schemes and to thank residents for their patience during a £100 million development to improve Bradford's sewerage and water system.

Entries are now being invited for the September award.

Groups chosen to benefit are those which can use the money to directly benefit members of the community.
