A Bradford troublemaker is being named and shamed in the first leaflet drop of its kind to prevent him breaching an Anti-Social Behaviour Order.

More than 500 fly posters and leaflets featuring nuisance Tariq Ali were being distributed to homes and businesses around Shipley town centre from today.

Shoppers, residents and workers have been urged to call the police if they spot the 20-year-old in the town from which he has been banned for four-and-a-half years.

Shipley town centre manager Yvonne Crossley said the leaflet drop was proof that the town was "no soft touch."

She said: "Let this be a warning to other troublemakers that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated here.

"A lot of hard work has gone into reducing crime in our town centre and we've got a great working partnership between the neighbourhood police teams, the anti-social behaviour teams and businesses. We've also had extra CCTV put in. Shipley is not a soft touch."

Earlier this year Ali, of Girlington, had an ASBO issued against him by Bingley magistrates who also banned him from being seen with 14 named friends with whom he had been causing bother.

Magistrates heard about 25 incidents which included Ali stealing bottles of suntan lotion, harrassing stallholders, stealing a parrot, drinking alcohol outside Asda, setting fire to a tree and rolling marijuana cigarettes.

The banning area forms a triangle stretching from the Bradford Road junction with Otley Road, to Otley Road's junction with Commercial Street and to Saltaire Road's junction with Bradford Road.

The order also prevents Ali acting anywhere in West Yorkshire in a way likely to cause nuisance, harm, alarm or distress.

It also stops him abusing, insulting, harassing or threatening anyone person also barring him from encouraging or inciting anyone else to carry out prohibited acts on his behalf.

Anti-Social Behaviour Officer John Crosland said: "We don't do this with every Anti-Social Behaviour Order but in Ali's case it was important because he had been such a nuisance.

"Businesses and residents need to be aware that this man is not allowed anywhere near them in that area.

"If he is spotted the police have to be told straight away. It's not a 999 job but he has to be reported and the police will have the power to arrest him for breaking the order."

Anyone who sees Ali in breach of the order should call the police on 0845 6060606.
