Heroin and crack with a street value of £675,000 have been seized in Bradford this year - all due to tip-offs from the public, police revealed today.

The seizures have led to 373 arrests, the latest being a 15-year-old teenager in Girlington on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.

Detective Inspector Neil Benstead, the head of the Bradford District Drugs Team, said all arrests were probably linked to a call to Crimestoppers - the anonymous hotline for members of the public.

He urged people to continue providing information.

"Almost all our arrests are attributable to a tip-off somewhere along the line," he said.

"Someone might call in and tells us of a dealer operating from a car outside their house and we might arrest him somewhere else. The caller won't know we have taken him off the streets, but we have. We act on every piece of information received.

"It could be that one tip-off is the final piece of a jigsaw we need to complete, you never know.

"Because the line is anonymous we cannot call back, so the caller may never know what has happened as a result of their action."

The Bradford figures form part of the drugs seizures valued at £1 million across West Yorkshire since the start of the year thanks to calls to Crimestoppers.

Out of the 373 Class A related arrests in Bradford 139 people ended up charged with drug trafficking.

Det Insp Benstead said: "We must be making inroads, it is not the tip of the iceberg now, but there are always people willing to take their places.

"We hope our activity will stop those people from being recruited. If they see us arresting their friend they may think: this is not for me."

The single biggest seizure this year was 6 kilos of heroin with a street value of £300,000 along with a shotgun and 250 cartridges in Shipley in May.

Det Insp Benstead said most of the dealers were men aged from late teens to early 30s but some were older into their 50s. The arrest of the 15-year-old in Girlington this week was a rare case.

"It is unusual to arrest someone so young for such a serious offences," said Det Insp Benstead.

l Eighty wraps of suspected heroin and crack were seized in Keighley yesterday after a tip-off to Crimestoppers. Two men were arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply. A further male was arrested nearby on suspicion of conspiracy to supply class A drugs.
