The number of charges against a roller disco DJ from Oxenhope accused of sexual assault has risen to more than 70.

Barry Spencer, 60, appeared at Leicester Crown Court last Thursday accused of abusing one boy and 15 girls, aged between five and 15, in alleged incidents spanning 40 years.

In April this year, Spencer appeared before magistrates accused of a total of 14 offences of indecent assault and indecency with children.

Police have subsequently charged him with a further 60 offences.

He allegedly met some of the youngsters at Granby Halls, in Leicester, where he worked as a DJ and floor manager for about 30 years, until it closed in 1998.

Spencer is accused of repeatedly sexually abusing the children, many of whom are now grown up.

Last Thursday, the court was told Spencer faced a total of 74 charges, including indecent assaults, four serious sex assaults and three rapes.

The first allegation dates back to the early 60s and the most recent is alleged to have taken place in 2003.

Spencer, of Mill Court, did not enter any pleas during a five-minute preliminary hearing.

At the time of his arrest he was a refuse collector for Bradford Council.

Judge Michael Stokes QC adjourned the case for a plea and directions hearing on September 30. Spencer was remanded back into custody.

Granby Halls was formerly one of the busiest skating rinks in the country, and regular roller discos attracted children from across Leicestershire.
