Cycling stars of the future showed their own pedal power when the Tour of Britain raced through Keighley yesterday.

Dozens of youngsters saddled up in Victoria Park to take part in a series of cycling events yesterday.

The fun was organised to coincide with the blue riband race, which came through the town at midday before heading off to the second of four climbs on the day at Oxenhope.

A small circuit was laid out around Victoria Park.

Top cyclist proved to be 13-year-old Paul Young, whose father is a keen cyclist. He completed nearly 16 laps in the 20 minutes.

Also there was Patrick Tucker, 15, from Riddlesden, who completed 15 laps.

He said: "I was going to go and watch the race anyway so when I saw this event publicised in the Keighley News I thought I would come down with my bike beforehand.

"I thought it was going be on tarmac so it was a bit bumpy on my roadbike."

The event was overseen by Anthony Gill, sports development officer with Bradford Council.

He said: "We could have done with a few more kids down. It will be good for them to see the tour come past and inspire them.

"Overall we have about 50 youngsters here getting some exercise, which is better than sitting at home in front of the Playstation."

A display was also put on by a team from Aire Valley Cycles, which assembled an obstacle course in front of Victoria Hall to perform tricks. And a range of bizarre bikes, including a miniature penny farthing, recycling cycle and a four-wheeled form, provided entertainment for younger children.
