A young woman who narrowly escaped becoming a victim of "date rape" has spoken out in the hope of preventing another attack.

The last thing the woman, who we agreed not to name, remembers is getting into a taxi near Town Hall Square, Keighley, at about 3am on Sunday.

The next thing she knew she was wandering aimlessly around Riddlesden two hours later, with no idea of where she was or how she got there.

She said: "It was about 5am when I came around and I didn't know where I was. I was crying. I was a mess. I couldn't find my bag so I started knocking on people's doors.

"When I finally got someone up they called me a taxi and I phoned my mum. She called the police."

The 20-year-old, from Riddlesden, had been on a night out with friends when the incident happened.

They had a few drinks in Bingley then caught the train into Keighley at about 11pm to go to K2 nightclub, in High Street.

She said: "I didn't even have a lot to drink. I think I only had one in K2. I've always been really wary of not leaving my drink unattended and staying with friends on nights out. That night I was with quite a lot of people, many of them friends of friends. I don't remember there being anyone hanging around that I didn't know."

When the club closed at about 2am, the young woman and her friend went to get some takeaway food then a taxi.

She said: "My friend said she put me in a taxi then went to get one for herself. I remember getting into the taxi but then I must have just blacked out.

"The policewoman said it sounded like my drink had been spiked with Rohypnol."

Otherwise known as the "date rape" drug, Rohypnol is a tasteless and odourless drug which depresses the central nervous system, relaxes the muscles sending the subject to sleep.

The terrified woman, who works in telesales in Keighley, said: "I felt like I was dead. Like I wasn't there at all."

Her missing bag was handed in near to where she had caught a taxi -- minus her mobile phone and cash.

The woman believes she was not physically assaulted during the blackout, but has visited a doctor and agreed to have various tests.

She warned others to be vigilant when on a night out.

She added: "I just don't want this happening to anybody else. I'm okay but the next person might not be so lucky. It could be fatal."

A police spokesman said there had been no other reported date rape cases in Keighley.

"Inquiries are still on-going into this incident and to establish whether or not this girl's drink was spiked," he said.

As general advice, people should be careful when out to keep their eyes on their drinks at all times and not leave them unattended."

The self-employed Bradford Council-licensed taxi driver who drove the woman to Riddlesden was being sought to help piece together the night's events.

K2 manager Jason Hawkins said: "We certainly advise our customers not to leave their drinks unattended at all times, but other than that there's not much else we can do."
