THE skies over Barnoldswick were filled with colourful balloons, some lit up at night, as visitors from far afield flocked to the third Balloons over Barlick event during the Bank Holiday weekend.

Around 4,500 people visited Victory Park over the three days to see balloons, stilt walkers, an acrobatic duo and to listen to a six-piece band which makes its instruments from recycled materials.

The highlight of the event was the spectacular mass launch and magical sound of the night glow on Saturday evening, which culminated in a firework display. This year's music followed a space theme.

The balloonists were welcomed to the event by Coun Marlene Hill-Crane, chairman of Barnoldswick Town Council. She said: "Your visit enables us to join with you in presenting a superb local - and regional - event enjoyed by thousands.

"The council is working hard to develop Barnoldswick as 'the place to visit'," she added.

Organised by Barnoldswick's Community Arts Group, the event has previously taken place in September.

According to the group's spokesman Coun David Whipp, it was a gamble that proved successful: "This year we took a gamble on moving it to the Bank Holiday weekend and that has paid off with record attendances.

"The weather gods smiled on us by providing the only calm, wind free period during the three days," he added.

There were 11 balloons in total at the event over the three days, with five taking part in the nightglow. Other balloons had been taking off and landing throughout the weekend.
