Already promoted to Division One of the BGU Scratch League, Ghyll's four-man scratch team went one better when they won the Bradford Golf Union Team Championship at Woodhall Hills on Sunday for the first time in the club's 98 year history.

In the process, they became only the second nine-hole club to do so.

Having narrowly got through the qualifying round earlier in the season to get into the last 12 of the 28 clubs who entered, team captain Andy Riley led the way with a 76 and a 70, the second best individual total on the day. Ably assisted by Stephen Greenwood (73 and 77), Stephen Pickles (80 and 73) and Tony Turner (79 and 74), the Ghyll quartet returned an aggregate 602, four shots ahead of Baildon GC, with Cleckheaton GC in third place.

o Calm conditions and greens made more receptive by recent rain made for low scores in the August Medal and second round of the Club Championship played at Ghyll on Saturday. Nick Kilgallon (80-17-63) took the honours on the card from Brent Noble (88-25-63), while Norman Shapland (84-18-66) was third on the card from Andrew Harling (69-3-66).

In the 36 hole Club Championship played off scratch, Andrew returned scores of 74 and 69, beating Stephen Pickles (71 and 74) by two shots. In the nett competition, a three card play-off was needed before David Cockell (71& 66) emerged as the winner from Mick Shaw (70 & 67) and John Blackmore (68 & 69).

On Sunday, Andrew Gibb partnered Andrew Leah to victory in the summer fourball, returning 44 points with the pairings of Jonathan Riley and Bob Wood (43 pts), and Lee Devenport and Sheldan Pickles (42 pts) completing the placings.

o Mick Boardman completed his sixth hole-in-one on the uphill 219 yard 'Mast' hole on President's Day, a repeat performance of Steve Platt's in this year's Captain's Day and also complementing his son Scott's first hole-in-one earlier this year. Playing with Derek Hartley and Oliver Topp, he used a three wood. His first was as a junior 27 years ago but he reckoned that this was the best of the six, all achieved at Ghyll.

Jonathan Parker, who joined Ghyll as a junior 20 years ago, has at last achieved his first hole-in-one. In the company of John Ensby and Keith Spragg, he holed out on the 187 yard 'Hill Top' hole using a five iron.

o Ghyll juniors completed their season of 12 medal competitions in the last week of the holidays before returning to the rigours of the chalk face. On hard and running fairways, Scott Boardman shot an impressive 78-17-61 to lift the Ouzledale Trophy from Joshua Riley (83-20-63), with Courtney Kegg (90-26-64) in third spot. However in the Daily Telegraph qualifer for the Derek Turner Memorial Trophy, played off the white markers and in heavy rain, conditions were far more challenging. A sodden Stephen Greenhalgh returned a commendable 92-26-66 to win from Robert Greenwood (96-27-69) and Scott Boardman (93-17-76).

o THE Bentham team of Rachel Dawber, Sally Carter and Judy Lovett won the ladies' open at Bentham Golf Club. In a stroke play competition with the best two counting at each hole, the home trio won with a nett 136.

Other top finishers were 2 Jacky Hubbard, Jean Irving and Eve Burns (from Heysham) 141, 3 Lady Captain, Lady Vice Captain and Debbie Wood (from Bentham) 141, 4 Jennifer Taylor, Sue Jones and Jackie Gow (from Heysham) 143, 5 Trudy Hubbard, Sue Chapman and Evelyn Titterington 145.

o Andy Chappell and Chris Brown from Kirkby Lonsdale won the men's invitation day last Saturday with 45 points. Second were Jim Halpin and his brother P Halpin with 44 points and third were Duncan Stephenson and Trevor Brown, also from Kirkby Lonsdale, with 43 points.
